The Best Coastal RV Destinations for Summer

What is the best coastal RV destination this summer?  It is the coast that delivers the features you want for the best warm escape.  It may also be near you for convenient access.  Or, it may be an RV destination that fulfills your summer hobby needs.  Whatever you are looking for in your RV getaway, here is a list of top options this year.

This list was curated by combining popular travel industry experts’ recommendations, top Google RV destination searches, and accessible coastal areas for RVers.  I have been RVing for over five years full-time and traveling the U.S. for nearly five decades, and these are a compilation of budget and RV-friendly locations.  They are also some of the most beautiful and peaceful coastal camping landscapes.

The Southern Coastal RV Vibe

Apalachicola, FL

Apalachicola personifies the southern charm.  The people are friendly, the historic downtown is slow-paced, and the fresh seafood is at the center of the southern experience.  The town operates around the Apalachicola River and is close to the bay.  Expect direct access to oysters, shrimp, and clams.

There are around 20 full-hookup campgrounds around Apalachicola, Florida.  If you want access to Southern foods, there are plenty of festivals in the area.  Don’t miss the St. George Island Beer Festival nearby or the Seafood Festival in Apalachicola.

Outer Banks, NC

Outer Banks, NC

You won’t miss out on the coastal charm of Outer Banks.  The small-town community combined with the rich history makes this a coast to visit.  You will be surrounded by lighthouses, quiet villages, and sites associated with the Wright brothers.

There are around 15 campgrounds on the Outer Banks, with almost all of them offering full hookups.  Many sites are only a few steps away from the ocean.  You can climb the east coast’s highest sand dune, visit a replica of the Wright Brothers’ plane, get a history lesson on the mystery of Roanoke, or set sail on the Elizabeth II.

Best Beaches on the Coast

Malibu, CA

Robert H Meyer Memorial State Beach does not have beach RV camping, but you can stay nearby.  This will put you nearest the three beaches in the state park.  It is actually nice that you can’t camp here because it leaves the entire space open for beautiful photography, beach sunsets, and cave exploring.

You may drive 15-30 minutes to stay in a full-service campground.  There may be size limitations on the length of your rig, so check those stats with each campground.  If you are about the beaches, it may be a little more time and more impact on the budget, but you will not leave unsatisfied.

Gulf Shores, AL

The beaches here have many more RV camping areas (over 100 locations!).  You may opt for a river view for lower rates, but still be near the coast. You will get all the beach and water activities at this coastal stay.  Everything from white sands to dolphin tours in the gulf, or parasailing from above.  There are all types of museums too.  Try the Mardi Gras museum, Foley Railroad Museum, or the Fort Morgan Historic Site.  There is also a lot of shopping at the outlets, HarborWalk Village, and Fairhope Avenue.  Then back to the best beaches in the U.S.

The 11 Best Beach Campgrounds on the Gulf Coast

Historic Escapes Along the Coastline

Acadia National Park, ME

You can camp at two campgrounds in Acadia or at least another 20 campgrounds nearby.  All types of amenities and services are offered so you can choose the one that best meets your budget and preferences.

Acadia National Park is built on history.  Explore the Carriage roads and gatehouses dated between 1913-1940.  Walk historic trails used by settlers from the 1800s to the 1930s.  Visit lighthouses along the coastline and learn about Maine’s nautical history.  Numerous historical structures, bridges, memorials, and monuments throughout the park provide you with more information on the beginnings of the park.

Savannah, GA

You can start with a stay at Fort McAllister State Park.  They offer full-hookups and can handle larger RVs.  You may have a 45-minute drive into downtown historic Savannah, but you will be right on top of history in the park.  Explore cannons, a hot shot furnace, bombproof barracks, Civil War artifacts, and more onsite.

Surrounding Savannah, there are many other forts and historic sites you don’t want to miss. There might be as many full-service RV campgrounds around Savannah as there are historic sites, and they are close.

Camping Tips for Coastal RV Destinations

There is special preparation you need to do prior to going to a coastal summer RV destination.  Camping on the coast brings a unique experience and also conditions.  Here are a few things to know before you go.

  • Tides – Even if you won’t be camping directly on the beach, you should be aware of the tide charts for your area.  Low-lying areas can flood quickly, and your picnic or swim area will be inaccessible.  Plan your outings, picnics, or camping area around the high tide marks.
  • Winds – Think about all the items that can be an issue in strong winds – trash cans, chairs, awnings, and any light items.  Bring along stakes that will work in the sand or loose soil so you can anchor anything that may become a sail in the wind.
  • Rip Currents – If you plan on enjoying a swim in the ocean during your coastal camping, learn the potential dangers of rip currents.  Try to swim in areas where lifeguards are available.
  • Sand – Sand is different at various coastal sites.  Don’t get your RV or vehicle stuck because the sand is not drivable.  You may also want extra tents outside your RV to sit under for outdoor eating or activities to keep sand out of your food and gear.
  • Camping Limits – If you are staying at a national or state campground, be aware that camping days may be limited.  Some areas limit you to a stay of 14 consecutive days.  Others will require you to purchase a camping pass.  Check all the requirements before you arrive.  Coastal campgrounds also book fast.  Book your site at least a year in advance if possible.

Once all the planning is complete, you are ready for your coastal getaway.  Leave work and concerns behind because you are going to receive a visual and harmonious treat.  Enjoy the sunsets, history, and happy camping!
