When it comes to selling things, the way they look can have a huge impact. This is why it is so important to make sure your boat has good “curb appeal” before you list it. This doesn’t have to mean making huge, expensive upgrades. Even small things can make a big difference when it comes to making your boat more appealing to buyers.

Not sure where to begin? Here are our top tips for increasing your boat’s curb appeal!

First Impressions Matter: The Power of Presentation

First and foremost, tackle the easy and obvious things. First impressions matter, and a dirty space or lots of clutter is going to turn a lot of people away.

Start by removing all clutter and personal items. The boat should be empty and ready for the next owner. Clean the entire boat—including the hull and the deck—and take care of topside detailing. A fresh wax and polish is also a good idea for a showroom shine.

Exterior Upgrades That Pay Off

A simple cleaning is often all the exterior of a boat needs to look shiny and ready for new adventures. That said, there are some upgrades you can make to improve the look even more and draw attention to your listing.

New decals or hull graphics can modernize and improve the look of an older boat, especially if the sun and water have damaged the old decals. You might also consider repainting or touching up the gel coat to address the scratches, fading, and discoloration that most used boats have.

Lastly, replacing worn parts like fenders and dock lines will help clean up the look of the boat. Just make sure to match the color scheme for a polished look!

Cockpit & Deck Improvements

Improving the cockpit and deck can also help make your boat more appealing to potential buyers. Besides, sometimes such improvements also help make the boat safer, something a buyer is sure to appreciate.

For instance, you might replace the deck matting or non-skid finishing, something that will improve visual appeal while also improving safety. Adding modern LED lighting also adds to the charm of the boat while giving an extra safety feature.

While it doesn’t improve safety, we also recommend looking into replacing cushions or upholstery, as it can make an enormous difference when it comes to the boat’s curb appeal.

Cabin Enhancements Buyers Notice

You may not be able to see inside the cabin from outside, but buyers will still be looking at photos of the cabin, and those who are interested in the boat will want to tour the cabin. For this reason, it is a good idea to do some quick, easy updates inside as well.

Start by replacing outdated hardware or fixtures such as knobs, faucets, and latches. This is super easy to do, relatively inexpensive, and can completely change the look of the space.

Upholstery is also an important thing to consider. Reupholster the furniture, or at least steam clean all fabrics to remove stains and smells. Fresh-looking furniture is so much more appealing than stained or worn upholstery.

You may also want to add practical storage solutions. These could include small baskets, racks, or organizers. This is simple to do, but really helps buyers see how the space will function, and any extra storage you can add to the tiny living setup is a good thing.

Tech Touches That Modernize

It might seem like tech upgrades would be a lot more involved than most of the upgrades on this list so far. However, this isn’t necessarily true because there are some less expensive tech upgrade options out there.

One example is a Bluetooth stereo system. These systems don’t have to be super expensive, and an audio upgrade is appreciated by many buyers. You could also install USB charging ports. These aren’t in older boats but are often expected by today’s buyers.

Tablet mounts or navigation holders add convenience and perceived tech-readiness, and are a super easy upgrade to make.

Quick Fixes for Engine and Systems Appeal

Upgrades to the engine or systems in a boat are, for the most part, very expensive and labor-intensive. That said, there are a handful of easy things you can do to at least clean things up.

For starters, consider touching up worn or scratched paint on the engine block and/or housing to make it look more presentable. Replacing corroded clamps and hoses is also a good idea.

For extra measure, you might even go in and label important system parts to make them easier for a buyer to inspect and use.

Final Touches Before Showing

By the time you’ve made the upgrades above, your boat is going to be looking pretty spiffy and ready to be shown. That said, there are a handful of finishing touches you might want to make to make the space even more inviting.

Start by staging the boat. Use neutral, tasteful decor and keep it minimal to avoid a cluttered look. Add a pleasant (but not overpowering) air freshener to make the space smell nice.

For an added touch, create a maintenance log and spec sheet, laminate it, and set it out in the cabin for potential buyers to see.

Conclusion

It may feel crazy to put work into a boat you’re trying to get rid of, but first impressions really are everything when it comes to selling boats, and making small improvements can make an enormous difference. Even these simple, inexpensive upgrades will likely lead to a faster sale and you’re likely to get more for the boat as well.

Not sure the improvements listed above will make your boat the best it can be? Think like a buyer and consider what other things you might look for. It can also help to pull in a knowledgeable friend to take a look and give an opinion from a different point of view.
