Selling your RV during the holidays doesn’t have to be hard!  People may be distracted with all the festivities, but with a little strategy, this could be the best time for you to sell.  You just need to know how to approach the challenges of a holiday sale.  Balance it with understanding the market, the competition, your RV’s assets, with the traditions of the season.

You will need a plan that would be different from selling in the fall or spring, even in summer.  Winter months are usually off-season selling periods, but there are viable ways to approach the holidays for a successful sale.  I suggest using holiday traditions as an opportunity.

Holiday RV Sales

We know everything can sell if you find the right buyer with the right sales approach.  You need to think about who your buyers will be during the holidays.  You will be looking for those who want to save and are patient enough to wait for a good deal during the winter.  Or you may be selling to someone looking for a unique gift for the holidays.

Define the buyer who will pay the price you want for your rig.  You also want to set yourself apart from dealerships.  Don’t offer the same discounts and incentives they offer.  Be creative in selling to the buyers for your unique RV.  Here are some things you should focus on when considering a holiday sale:

  • What are the potential buyers looking for during the holidays?
  • Are the buyers busy with other holiday plans?  How do you get them to look at your RV?
  • What sales can you offer that are unique to your location, RV, or holiday?

Pricing Your RV

Attract holiday buyers with smart pricing and a unique RV offer.

Because the holiday season is a slower time to see, you want to put your best foot forward.  You want a price that will attract buyers, but you can look for cost-effective ways to offer a lower price than just cutting the price tag.

  1. Start by using a valuation guide like J.D. Power RV Value Guide (used to be NADA Guide).
  2. Check online listings selling RVs by owners like National Vehicle.
  3. Know what RVs like yours are selling for in your location.
  4. Have your paperwork and be able to list upgrades you have made on the rig.
  5. Offer pricing discounts that will appeal to the holiday shopper.
  6. Know what range of discounts you are willing to offer and what your baseline acceptance price will be.

Holiday Selling Benefits

You are looking for smart buyers during this period.  Usually, RV shoppers are looking in the spring and summer months, but a smart shopper will be patient and look for good deals.  But this is also a time you can appeal to buyers who are gift shopping or looking to start the new year with a new lifestyle.  Traditional benefits for selling your RV during the holidays might be:

  • Less Competition – Posting something online now will beat the normal rush of sellers in the spring and summer.
  • Motivated Buyers – Maybe the buyers missed getting to make a purchase in the summer and are very ready now.  They may be looking forward to a nice tax refund and are prepared to buy now.
  • Preparation Time – During the holidays, you may have more time available to prep your rig and prepare some great online postings of your rig.
  • Winterization Costs – You may be looking forward to not having the expense of storing your RV or preparing it for storage.

There is a whole new layer of things you can do that will fit with this season of selling.  Here are some things you can do that can help encourage buyers who are looking to celebrate with gift giving or the holidays.

  • Decorate!  Are you promoting sales for Christmas, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, or Valentine’s?  Package your RV for the season.  Wrap it in giant bows, put up lights, or hang wreaths.  When someone comes to see your RV, use a holiday scented diffuser with sugar cookie or pine tree scents.  Don’t forget all the space in the rig.  Include seasonal throws, blankets, and warm, cozy feeling items. And post all these photos online.
  • Holiday Discount.  Consider offering a $500 gift card for a holiday purchase.  Say it is to buy holiday things for the RV.  Sometimes buyers see more value in a gift card.
  • Gift Giving.  Offer hot chocolate and cookies or other winter favorites for the first 10 people who come to see your rig.  Or tell them you will include a one-year membership to an RV organization.  Offer to have a full fuel tank when they drive away with their purchase.  This is the season for sharing, right?

Get creative in your incentives to make a holiday sale.  This is a unique time you can set yourself and your RV apart from all other sellers.  It also shows you have taken time and commitment with your RV, both in ownership and for the final sale.

I can tell you, when I’m scrolling through all the photos of the RVs and I see the rig being pulled by Santa’s reindeer with a big red bow on it, I’m going to stop and see what that posting is all about.  Each time you pull the potential buyer in closer to meeting them in person, the greater your sale opportunity.  And in sales, the first holiday impression is everything!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do RVs sell during the holidays?

Yes, they do.  There are fewer buyers during the winter, so you need to be focused on your sales efforts.  Know your buyer and what your rig has to offer.

What’s the best way to price my RV during the holidays?

Use online valuation guides.  Using your RV’s details like make, model, year, and bonus options, you can come up with the fair market value.  Use this as a starting point.  Check other online listings too, so you get a feel for what the current pricing and demand are on your RV type.  Don’t forget unique ways to offer extras without it costing.
