2024 is coming to a close. It’s been a wild ride with lots of ups and downs in the RVing world, but overall we’d say we’ve had a pretty good one. We’ve seen the beginnings of RV market stabilization, witnessed some really cool new trends from RV manufacturers, and watched as the RV lifestyle has changed to welcome new ideas and take on certain challenges.

In this article, we will take a look back at 2024 and how the RV world has evolved throughout the year.

Market Performance and Sales Trends

After a pandemic-driven surge, the RV industry has faced a downturn in 2024. The industry has seen significant declines in new RV orders and production. In July, truck-chassis orders for Class A and Class C motorhomes plummeted by 66%, with production dropping 51%.

This seems a bit unsettling on the surface, but really it’s all just the market starting to level back out after the gigantic spike in RV sales we saw during the pandemic. Despite all of the setbacks, certain segments have shown resilience and there are signs that the market is beginning to stabilize, so there really is no need to worry.

Consumer Preferences and Emerging Trends

Things have also changed in terms of what we are finding in new RVs as they hit the market, as well as what consumers are looking for. Let’s take a quick look at some of the most popular trends in 2024.

Solar Power and Energy Efficiency

RVers know what they want and need to live a comfortable travel life, and one of the things they’ve been asking for is freedom from the grid. This, in addition to the recent focus on eco-friendly living, has led RV manufacturers to begin offering solar-ready RVs and rigs with solar power systems already installed.

These systems, in combination with the energy efficient appliances that have become popular recently, have given RVers the freedom they crave and the ability to live a green lifestyle without sacrificing their nomadic tendencies.

Electric Vehicles

Another major focus in the RV industry? Electric and hybrid motorhomes and towing vehicles. There is even a self-propelled trailer on the market that helps reduce fuel consumption! This is excellent because it makes eco-friendly RVing even more possible and could reduce the cost of constant travel by reducing or removing the need to purchase fuel for a vehicle.

Small Trailers

Speaking of reducing or removing the need to purchase fuel for a vehicle, we are also seeing an uptick in the number of compact trailers being purchased. This is likely because these smaller rigs allow for more travel freedom without an enormous fuel budget or the need to purchase a huge tow vehicle. Because these driving forces are so strong, we expect to see this trend continue.

Tech Innovations

We saw the technical side of RVing evolve a bit during 2024 as well. Starlink solidified itself as the go-to internet solution for RVers. Improved reliability and expanded coverage meant better connectivity, even in the most remote boondocking spots.

Additionally, smart RV systems that allow you to control your RV systems from afar—as well as keep a close eye on things like water tank and battery levels—have become more commonplace and user friendly, making RVing easier than ever.

The cherry on top? Augmented-reality (AR) navigation systems came into play, making it easier to find optimal camping spots, avoid low-clearance bridges, and more. Choosing the safest and most scenic route is now a cinch, and you can easily pick boondocking sites (or even sites) in a campground in advance.

RV Lifestyle Trends and Evolution

Even if you didn’t buy one of the fancy new RVs that hit the market in 2024, the way you travel in your RV may have changed during 2024 for other reasons. Here are some of the biggest changes to the way people are living the RV lifestyle these days.

Record Attendance at RV Gatherings

Despite the decline in RV sales, we are still seeing an enormous number of people traveling via RV. Some travel only occasionally, but many are living the full time RV life. This has led to record attendance at several RV social events in 2024.

Events like the “Escapade” by Escapees RV Club, the Alliance RV Rally, and FMCA conventions saw record attendance, as did the Truck Camper Adventure Quartzsite Rally. All of this highlights the communal aspect of RV life.

The RV Industry Power Breakfast and RV Dealers Convention/Expo also saw more attendees than ever, and America’s Largest RV Show—the 55th annual show in Hershey, Pennsylvania—saw a 5% increase in attendees.

Slow and Minimal Living Movement

The “slow living” and “minimalist” movements have been chugging along for a while now, and these movements definitely saw growth in 2024. More and more people are hopping on the simplified living bandwagon, focusing on things like cooking at home, connecting with others, minimizing the number of things they own, and making a point of slowing down and enjoying the simple things in life.

These movements go hand-in-hand with RV living, which naturally requires a minimalist mindset and can even lower your budget significantly, making it easier to focus on a slower lifestyle full of connections and joy.

New Challenges for RVers

Of course, RVers have also faced a number of challenges this year. As mentioned above, RVing remains a popular form of travel since the 2020 rise in RV owners, meaning 1) campgrounds are crowded, and 2) it can be difficult to find camping spots, especially during peak seasons.

This, in combination with rising campground prices, has led many RVers to turn to boondocking, resulting in—you guessed it—more crowded boondocking areas. Rising gas prices have also impacted nomads, encouraging slower travel.

2024 has also brought many weather extremes, including heat waves, hurricanes, and more. This has caused a lot of travelers to rethink their routes.

Looking Ahead

With 2025 just around the corner, we’re excited for innovations like fully solar-powered motorhomes, electric trucks and motorhomes, and advancements in off-grid technology.

We predict that the RV market will stabilize quite a bit. We also think full time RVing will continue to be a popular lifestyle choice for people of all ages who wish to save money, live a simpler life, and see new things. While challenges are sure to remain, the sense of adventure and freedom provided by the RV lifestyle outweighs them all.
