Boat Trends: What’s Hot in 2025

This year is a great year for boaters. The industry is focused on the boater as a whole and not a single thread. This year you can look for a combination of high-end tech, more customization options, more eco-friendly designs, and lots of other boat trends.

According to the Boat and Ship MRO Market Report for 2025, growth this year “can be attributed to demand for specialized expertise, adoption of preventive maintenance, focus on cost-efficiency, environmental and safety concerns, innovations in shipbuilding.”

These developments are a strong reflection of how the boat market continues to evolve with both buyers and sellers in mind.

Interior Boat Trends

Customization

The marine interior industry has grown over thirteen percent in the last year. This is a clear indicator that this market is hot! But what does that growth indicate?

What we have seen from 2024-25 is an emphasis on your comfort while boating and more buoyant materials so you can use less fuel and go faster. This means giving you more options and choices for your interior.

Expect more interactive customization in all areas of your boat experience – from products and installation to applications and materials. As manufacturers adjust to consumer demand, both new boat and used boat buyers are gaining more flexibility in what they can personalize.

Digitalization

The Marine Interiors Market predicts this growth will continue into 2029 at around eleven percent. This growth will be supported by integrating virtual reality into your boat design and retrofitting your current boat projects with new tech.

You will soon be enjoying smart boat technology due to the research for advancements in the digital industry. Customer participation in the design phase is relatively new but will continue to be redefined and enhanced by giving you real-time interaction and visuals.

These changes in the industry reflect evolving buyer expectations and a broader shift in the boat market toward innovation.

Tourism

Don’t forget that all other types of boat and ship travel contribute to the features that enhance your boat. To see where the interior market is going and what you can soon be adding to your boat or look for purchase or rent is what you see in the cruise industry.

Some of the largest ships in the ocean are cruise ships and they are upgrading and renovating them every year for the latest tech and comfort. With their plans for providing competition in the travel market, they drive trends in the boating industry.

These same trends often carry over to recreational boating as buyers look to replicate high-end cruise features in personal watercraft and leisure vessels.

Exterior Boat Trends

You may have a lot of the high-end tech and design features like the big ships but the exterior better defines you as a recreational boat. Instead of being used for commercial or tourism, your boat rental or purchase is focused on fun and leisure.

You might do work or business transactions from your boat but you opted for a boat mainly for recreation. For many, this is the heart of recreational boating, where features and functions come together.

Boat selection might be for a sailboat, skiff, yacht, or other watercraft. You will select different size engines and placements and your boat size selection is generally between 20-50 feet and specifically designed for different water activities.

This market has grown almost eight percent in the last year. The boating industry expects the market to maintain that number through 2029.

That type of growth supports strong boat sales across both new boat and used boat categories, especially in the first half of the year when activity peaks. Buyers today are focused not only on features, but also long-term value and potential resale price.

Sustainability

A lot of research has gone into being environmentally conscious. It isn’t really an option in this decade or moving forward.

Your boat propulsion system will see integration with solar and greener alternatives. You will also see sustainable materials in the creation of your boat like recycled aluminum, eco-friendly paints, and natural fibers.

Sustainability has become a key factor in both consumer demand and new boat sales, and many dealers are adjusting their offerings to match.

Exploration

If you are an adventurer or explorer in your boat, you will find new features emerging. Boats designed for long distance cruising are available.

Look for boats that have reinforced hulls and can handle all types of climates. These kinds of upgrades are showing up more often in the boat market, where buyers looking to explore new waters want reliable, durable options.

Specific Boat Trends

There is a lot going on in the boating industry. Here are some specific features we are seeing in the industry:

  • Joystick steering
  • Enhanced theft alarm management & boat recovery
  • Hull paint changes (to matte finishes and blue colors)
  • 3D printed accessories & mapping tools
  • High-speed Internet
  • Cool toys like underwater drones
  • Hybrid propulsion systems

Features like these help drive boat sales by offering more value to buyers, whether they’re in the market for a brand new boat or planning to sell their current model.

In the same period last year, boats with upgraded electronics and safety systems were among the most in-demand in the boat market.

Looking Ahead in the Boating World

It’s exciting to see where the industry takes us in the next year. From integrated design services to smarter tech and eco-conscious features, the boating experience is evolving fast.

Whether you’re planning to buy, sell, or simply enjoy your time on the water, these trends make it easier to embrace the boating lifestyle you envision.

Happy boating!
